TULUM
Undoubtedly, Tulum is the most popular archeological site in Riviera Maya. Maybe due to the importance for ancient Mayan commerce, the homonym town established around or its amazing views. It is considered the pearl of Caribbean in terms of beautiness and impresiveness. It is enough to say that it was constructed on the top of a 39-ft-tall Cliff in the border of Caribbean Sea. Nowadays, it provides tourists with the best souvenir-photos. Imagine yourself standing on a wood bridge looking at the pyramid with the turquoise waters in the background.Such a great photo, huh?
It is important to say that Tulum is much more than a bunch of assorted rocks and a tourist attraction. As it used to be one of the main trade hubs in Yucantan Peninsula, Tulum was built to provide a strong defense against invaders. First, it was surrounded with defense walls, then the high of the castle (tha main building) provided a wide visual range of the sea, and, if it weren’t enough, the main entrance is just besieged with a barrier reef which destroyed almost any ship. Actually, there is a story behind how mayan people entered the site. If you want to discover it, don’t hesitate… Visit Tulum!
COBA
It is just some minutes away from Tulum. Considered as one of the major mayan settlements in Yucatan Peninsula, it achieved its development by centralizing the politic and economic power. Then, as a show of greatness, inhabitants built one of the largest pyramids in the world… at least the tallest one in all Yucatan Peninsula. Nohoch Mul is the name of the 138-ft-tall pyramid.
The archeological site is famous for being a pioneer of modern highways. Ancient infrastructure allowed mayan people to build some roads to communicate the main communities. According to archeological evidence, Coba used to have around 50 lanes.
Today, Coba has become an unmissable attraction for people who wants to live an authentic mayan experience. This site, located in the heart of the Mayan Zone, is surrounded by small communities which still conserved some ancient traditions. Normaly, some members travel to Coba offering certain handcrafted articles or homemade food.
CHICHEN ITZA
Well, what else can be said about the most famous archeological site of all Yucatan Peninsula?
Since it was declared a Wonder of the World, Chichen Itza has become the main archeological attraction for any tourist. As a matter of fact, you can’t say you have come to Mexico, unless you visit Chichen Itza.
In my humble opinion, it is the most impressive site in all Mexico. I couldn’t tell exactly, why. But, It just has an special magic.
¡It is up to you to discover it!
